Solar energy has become a vital part of the global effort to create cleaner, more sustainable power sources. Every year on March 13th, Solar Appreciation Day offers a chance to recognize the benefits of solar power and encourage its wider adoption. This day highlights how solar energy contributes to reducing pollution, lowering energy costs, and supporting energy independence. Whilst most people may think of large-scale commercial projects or residential solar even small solar installs aboard boats all help.

Why Solar Appreciation Day?

Solar Appreciation Day is more than just a celebration. It serves as a reminder of the progress made in solar technology and the potential it holds for the future. Solar power is one of the fastest-growing energy sources worldwide. It reduces reliance on fossil fuels, which are major contributors to climate change and air pollution.

By appreciating solar energy, people become more aware of its advantages:

  • Environmental benefits

  • Economic savings

  • Energy independence

  • Silent power

Silent Power

You can't underestimate the importance of running a quiet boat

Solar energy comes from sunlight, which is captured by photovoltaic (PV) panels and converted into electricity. This electricity can power your home, business and even your boat too. Since 2018 we have helped thousands of boat owners go solar aboard. Solar energy integrates into everyday life, making it accessible and beneficial for many. For us personally we lived off grid in Hawaii for around 12 years and recently went solar on our grid tied house. With the Tesla Powerwall 3 battery we have 13.5kW of storage that we pull from during the night and that gets topped up with solar again the next day. Should we get lower than 10% battery then it will pull power from the grid.

We are all about sharing the solar love and educating others on the benefits of going solar. We will gladly help a boat owner looking to add a single 50W SunPower flex panel to help their boat sit on a mooring ball as much as a liveaboard family on a large catamaran adding 6x 430W fixed frame solar panels (and everything in between!) We will also answer any questions you may have about solar panels, how they work, what system components are required and help highlight the SunPower/Maxeon advantages over the competition.

We help with all sizes of solar installs small & large

Help share the solar love and get other boat owners enjoying the benefits of going solar aboard:

  • Post an install photo: Share your install photo on social media or with friends and family and tag us @sunpoweredyachts

  • Leave us a Google review: Have we done a good job helping you go solar? Let us and others know by leaving us a Google review.

  • Recycle your old solar panels: Be sure to recycle any old solar panels you might be upgrading and avoid throwing them into the marina dumpster. Many local transfer stations and recycling companies will accept solar panels as they have valuable components for recycling.

  • Donate directly to PMDP Hawaii: 1% of all our sales goes directly to PMDP Hawaii but it's also possible to donate to them directly and help support their hard work cleaning up tones of marine debris from the outer Hawaiian islands.

The Future of Solar Energy

Solar panels continue to improve, becoming more efficient but also much more affordable. Paired with batteries it allows users to store excess energy for use during cloudy days or nighttime.

As more people go solar at home so they want to adopt solar power on their boats and the demand for clean energy grows. Solar Appreciation Day reminds us that embracing solar energy is not just about technology but about creating a sustainable lifestyle that benefits the planet and future generations.
