Reddy Kilowatt was created in 1926 by Ashton B. Collins Sr., an electrical engineer who wanted a friendly mascot to promote electricity use. At that time, electricity was still a new and sometimes intimidating technology for many households. Collins designed Reddy as a stick figure made of lightning bolts, with a light bulb nose and electrical outlets for ears. This character made electricity approachable and fun.
