Maxeon has been in talks to build a brand-new factory in New Mexico for a few years, and we have already written two news posts about this. Maxeon proposed to build a 1.9 million sq.ft. 3GW plant where it would not only assemble solar panels but fabricate photovoltaic cells, which the company said would bring up to 1,800 jobs to the area.

Unfortunately, this proposal kept facing setbacks but as part of Maxeon's strategy and commitment to focus solely on the US market it has now executed a five-year lease on an existing building in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This was the former aerospace company Honeywell's location that shut down operations back in 2018.
The lease, for the building at 9201 San Mateo Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM will allow Maxeon to rapidly deploy an assembly plant with a 2GW annual capacity. There is already some activity on site and it expects to begin assembly of solar panels made in the USA in early 2026. The change of direction doesn’t mean building a new factory is off the table.

To soon have Maxeon solar panels made in the USA is going to be a huge advantage and will level the playing field amid a swath of low-cost solar panel imports from Asia and India. Also with ongoing import tariff confusion it will be hopefully lead to smoother panel supply.

New Mexico will be home to Maxeon & Ebon Solar
Maxeon is not the only player in town as New Mexico plans to be a global center for advanced energy manufacturing. Ebon Solar will be constructing a new 834,000-square-foot solar cell manufacturing facility in the Mesa del Sol industrial development area, creating over 900 new jobs.
